Sydney Fashion Week Street Style: Monochromatic, Patchwork, and Vibrant Colors

In a time where the world is entering its post-pandemic era, we’re lucky enough to see the return of beloved Fashion Weeks. Nearing the end of May, the Sydney Fashion Week Street Style took place. This unique show, taking place near the Carriageworks, honed in on the best winter-appropriate streetwear in the Southern Hemisphere.

It’s evident through observing the show that a few trends carried through. While it might not come as a surprise, monochrome outfits were featured pretty often. However, despite it being winter in Sydney, we see a plethora of vibrant colors incorporated into both men's and women’s outfits. Additionally, the trench coat and blazer are evidently popular pieces to complete any streetwear look. However, something worth noting is that a majority of the looks didn’t feature any busy prints or fabrics—nothing too complex in prints, because it seems the eye-catching details lie in the hands of sharp lines in shape and unique textures and colors.

Without further ado, let’s talk about some of the best moments in the Sydney Fashion Week Street Style.

This unisex look hints at the rise of loafers as an essential item to complete a fall or winter wardrobe. Additionally, it captures the artistry of layering: the model is wearing a trench coat, over a blazer, over what appears to be a graphic tee.

Here we can see the ever-present theme of monochromatic outfits in streetwear. Starting from left to right, the sneaker paired with business attire is a look that’s become very familiar. In the middle, not only do we see a large pop of color, but also the knit arm warmers which appear to be coming back into style. And on the right, the brown monochrome is perfectly paired with a chunky necklace that draws attention to the unique neckline of the blouse.

Almost unsurprisingly, the Bottega Veneta Cassette Bag made its way into Fashion Week numerous times, in numerous colors. This adorable look features a mix of pastel hues: from the light yellow square-toed heels to a mint green blazer. It also serves as a reminder that the right pair of jeans can uplift any outfit.

Here we can see not only an intentionally monochromatic outfit but one with close attention to detail. Monochrome is best done when it’s separated by multiple textures, as the model shows here in a knit half-zip sweater, loose smooth pants, and chunky sneakers. This look fits perfectly into a day of exploring Sydney, making it ideal streetwear.

What does this model’s look embody? It embodies power. In an almost minimalistic way, five pieces worked together to create a sleek streetwear outfit. With a simple black cropped top and pants combo, paired with black sunglasses, there’s a seamless foundation to work upon. That’s why an opened trench coat and New Balance sneakers are the perfect additions.

In this gaggle of women, there are a few noteworthy things happening. First, we see that the infamous teddy coat is still in style, in a structured version on the left. Next, we see the trendy heavy-duty white boots that look similar to those by Prada and Zara in 2020, which are perfect for a Sydney winter. Finally, we see a collection of neutral shades and blazers amongst the whole group.

Here we can see one of the most avant-garde looks of the week. There’s clear intention in the layering that takes place, and it creates a very artistic and interesting unisex streetwear outfit.

One of the most outstanding pieces in Fashion Week is this leather patchwork trench coat. Some might argue that patchwork clothing is a fading trend, however, with clean lines and a well-rounded color palette, this entire look is elegant and stylish.

The best part of this pair is the dichotomy of styles in the photo. On the left is a vibrant and adventurous take on street style, all the way down to the Crocs, or even the visor atop their head. In a very contrasting way, the right features an almost ‘70s take to street style, with a flared trousers and distinctive Mason Margiela shoes to complete the look. Both looks are unexpected in a pleasant way.

Here, this model is rocking cowboy books and a long, flowing dress, which are a bit unique to the other looks featured throughout the week. It takes a more colorful stance on streetwear, but the simplicity of it all is what allows for it to fit perfectly into Sydney Fashion Week Street Style.

Essentially, we can learn a lot from Sydney Fashion Week Street Style. It’s clear that kitten heels and square-toed sandals aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Unsurprisingly, leather is still a go-to for a streetwear look whether it be in your pants or your jacket.

Additionally, it seems that the trend of athleisure that came with quarantine still remains in small ways, like pairing a business look with sneakers. And it seems that Prada is still prominent in the world of shoes and accessories, as many of the participants in Fashion Week were clad in some variation of Prada boots or a Prada Cleo Bag.
