The Y2K Aesthetic
Even though we are in 2020, 2000-2009 fashion is coming back with a vengeance. Also known as the Y2K aesthetic, this type of style taps into the age of the holographic pop star outfits and a techno-utopia full of bright colors and 90's cartoons. This aesthetic oozes with the idea of future optimism, and reminiscing on the simpler days.
Like many other rising aesthetics, this one took over TikTok, with users making short, aesthetic videos. The videos consist of bejeweled flip phones, Bratz dolls, Hello Kitty tank tops and and hot pink mini skirts. There are no subtle touches of color; it's in your face with bubble gum pink's, blue raspberry handbags and sliver platforms.
Paris Hilton, the fashion icon of this era commented about this time in a tweet, "The early 2000's was such a fun and iconic era of fashion, people didn't have stylists and actually had personal style. Now everyone kinda looks the same!" Y2K is about individuality and standing out, there is nothing "basic".
To dress Y2k, it involves a lot of outfits that can be found at any thrift store or Y2K specialized boutiques. For women, scarf tops are the most popular from this era of fashion and they can be tied in many ways. This allows for a variety to different tops, with just a single scarf, making it cute and economical. They are also the less expensive way to gain this type of aesthetic. Chunky sneakers, heels, sandals or boots, leather skirts, and sparkly pants are the definition of Y2K. For a more dressed down style, while still keeping that vibrant energy, low rise jeans and cropped white tank tops or silky lingerie tops are the way to go.
There are a variety of online boutiques that specialize in Y2K and have gained traction amongst the steady growing of fans of this aesthetic. Some of these boutiques include Cyber Princess, Echo Club House, Tunnel Vision and Sarra Murra. All specialize in the 90's era of clothing, with popping colors and all the metallic accessories.
Y2K is a flashback to the days where technology was starting to rise, colors were blaring and individuality was taking the world by storm. It is simple yet unique. Who wouldn't want to channel their inner Paris Hilton?
