Y2K Trend Report

As the days draw out and the nights get longer, summer has never felt so close as that sun cascades over the bright and bold colour palettes of the Y2K aesthetic. Bobbing through the city streets are those pops of colour that we have embraced once more with open arms. The nostalgia of the early 00s has seen the resurgence of juicy oranges, sugary pinks, vivid yellows and luscious greens, all paired with the classic low-rise bootcut, mini-mini denim skirts, studded belts and kitten-heeled sandals. Embracing our 00s dream to become one of Destiny’s Children, we rocked those rhinestones, that glitter hair-spray and those frosted lip-gloss lips, and whilst the early 2000s were certainly an era of whimsical experimentation with colours and textures, it well and truly made a splash. From the glooms of our post-lockdown life, our fashion is in some definite need of fun flavour that only the 00s can offer us. To get to grips with the modern Y2K aesthetic, see our picks below to help relive your teenage fantasy.

Juicy Couture

If bling is your thing, the return to glamour with the iconic Juicy Couture velour tracksuit - it’s a Y2K must-have and our rhinestone dream. From the classically luxurious black velvet to playful tie-dye, Juicy will transform you from 2022 back to 2002.

Mini Skirts

Thanking Alicia Silverstone, the mini skirt surged in popularity from the 90s into the 00s acting as the perfect partner to the cropped tee. To keep your look elevated, don’t forget that leathers and wool-blends are Y2K staples but the pleated denim of our Bratz doll will certainly turn heads.

Beaded Necklaces

Whimsical, charmy and beaded jewellery, (the likes of which we used to make from string and the enamel beads in our bead boxes) are a signature accessory to any respectable 00s look. Whether you go all about with clashy colours or keep it simple with coordinating palettes, never skip out on your plastic partners.

Baby Tees

The teeny-weeny, baby tee looks are arguably the cutest Y2K looks to become vogue once more. Never forget that the mid-riff is your statement piece with these tops so make sure to show it off! Always opt for tops with playful prints, quirky quotes or colourful characters that take you back to your childhood dreams - iconic Y2K brands like Fiorucci or Juicy Couture will be your go-to.

Tie-front Tops

Making a come-back this year is the barely-there, peek-a-boo, tie-front tee. The body becomes the accessory with this bold look but you don’t have to just flash skin. Wear it with a cute, lacey bralette or even drape it over a plain tee, any look is bound to cause a nostalgic stir.

Baguette Bags

Thanking you Carrie Bradshaw we welcome back the super-neat, super-cute and super-tiny baguette bag - a true statement of the Y2K aesthetic and one that never needs a revamp. To truly get into the spirit of the nostalgia surge of fashion, pair your outfits with a vintage Louis Vuitton Pochette or a Fendi Baguette in pastel shades, but a pop of colour in smooth plastics will elevate any look.

Bandanas

A bandana will be the most versatile accessory that a budding Y2K fanatic can own. Tie it around your bag’s handles, wear it round your waist, wrap it around your head street-style or simply drape it through long locks, your bandana will change your vibe entirely. If you’re feeling playful, pattern-match or coordinate your colours with the rest of your ensemble for a totally, chic and polished look.

Butterfly Clips

Add a touch of your glittering youth to your looks with the millennial favourite - the butterfly clip. Replicate your Y2K style with the pin-up look, or braid with these grips as your cute statement piece or simply twist and pin your locks behind your ears, either way, these clips will be a fun and playful finish to any outfit.

Coloured Sunglasses

Colour pop shades are a runway favourite and elevate any look to the models on the catwalk. These shades come in many shapes and colours so play with shape and create sharp, dynamic and sophisticated looks. Don’t forget to balance them on your nose for the truly Parisian chic statement.

Plastic rings

The plastic jewellery doesn’t stop with what you wear on your neck. Go all-out with the Y2K aesthetic by accessorising your fingers too. Don’t be afraid to blend and clash colours and shapes. Mix in gold metals too if you want to modernise your 00s-inspired look, but always remember to play with shapes, texture and colour.
