Menswear is evolving more rapidly than ever in our internet-saturated age. Historically, menswear has gone through significantly fewer changes than womenswear, and from the 1900s on, there was a much more utilitarian view of masculine dress. While the dandy style of dressing was very popular in Europe before the 20th century (think frills, embroidery, and bright colors), well-tailored and minimal garments soon became the fashion. Anyone with enough money would be sporting a 3 piece suit and well-kept hair and hygiene. While the wars did evolve some styles of what we now consider a “classic Hollywood” look, it wasn’t until the social revolutions of the ’50s and ‘60s that men’s clothing as we know it today began to emerge.
Currently, brands like Tom Browne, Prada, Georgio Armani, Vivienne Westwood, and Loewe are reflecting and creating a new identity for menswear that involves more than just the everyday pant-shirt combo that most men have in their closet. Recently, with the fast-moving pace of information from online sources, fashion has been moving at an increasingly quick rate; and what we would consider in style men’s fashion is rapidly being phased out. Instead, we see clothing moving in a slightly more Avante-Garde direction - whether that be with bright colors and patterns, the updating of business wear, or the use of traditionally feminine trends. Maximalism is the new black, and the variety of choices is booming; now more than ever.
