The 2021 Year’s Best Round-Up: Cities

Design by Rachel Liu

No one can argue that the US has numerous cultural centers all across the country. With a nation that has so much history and diversity, there are locations that burst at the seams with a unique energy made through decades of change and creativity. Some are well known, and some, private joys for their residents. But, regardless of their rankings in any category, all of these cities provide a different taste of the country, and deserve their own recognition.

New York, New York

Widely recognized as one of the most influential art and fashion cities of the US, New York is constantly at the front of innovation. A wide range of cultures and experiences accrue in the city, and it is easy to see how it has produced both economic and artistic growth. Everyone wants to be a unique individual, and the fashion reflects that - with bold statement clothes and city outfits that you can’t quite get away with anywhere else. This populous metropolis is just the place to go if you are looking for diverse interaction and a plethora of entertainment.

Louisville, Kentucky

Do you love coffee and bourbon? What about boxing, cars, and baseball? Louisville is the perfect place to go on a hunt for drink and food with your friends, while also being the home to many iconic locations. The Kentucky Derby is regularly held in Louisville, and houses only one of many museums and exhibits dedicated to displaying the famous figures that have come out of the city. Old Louisville also remains standing, and many historical sites reside there waiting to be visited. You’ll find people sporting boots and a cowboy hats, right alongside folks dressed to the T in designer from the outlets nearby.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is not only the perfect place to enjoy warmer temperatures, but also to dive into the history of city culture. Boasting colorful architecture with a southern charm, its hard not to walk down city center or an outdoor market and admire the appeal of the city. Take one of the many ghost tours to learn about monumental sites, or ride on a horse-drawn carriage through town. A fan of preppy pastels and summer vibes? The two combine to make the fashion of this city funky and unique alongside the traditions of old southern living: this sweet and eclectic local is perfect for new experiences and hot-weather dressing.

Miami, Florida

Who can deny that Miami is one of the biggest hot spots for rising stars? Moreover, the fashion industry flourishes in Miami’s design district, and through other international events like Swimwear Week and Art Basel. The entertainment industries have left its mark on this tropical city, but that isn’t its only attraction. Interesting Art Deco architecture and mansions built nearly a century ago still stand among the modern and fast moving nightlife. Whether your visiting to party, or to see the pervasive wildlife, it is certainly an unexpected experience worth having.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Not every city is a metropolis, and Mackinac Island would lose some of its beauty if it were. While it isn’t a widely known destination, this hidden treasure is the perfect mix of city and town life side by side with an expanse of nature. Plan on staying in one of the high end hotels along the beach? Put on your sneakers or be ready to ride because there are no cars used on the island. Horses are ridden to get to your location - even through main street to pick up originally made fudge. You’ll want to dress in cozy athletic gear to get around this small fishing town, but don’t let that fool you. Even though the city is a quaint and peaceful place to go on vacation, it also has its fair share of luxury and niceties.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Don’t let the fear of the freeze scare you away from this city. Dispite its cold reputation, Milwaukee is a bustling center of its own. It might surprise some to know this Wisconsin city has its own thriving fashion scene (of course tailored to the cold) and hosts a Milwaukee fashion week like other major design centers. Outside of that, the city is known for its breweries - both old and new - and its easy to find a place that serves good food and drink. It also houses art museums and the Harley-Davidson museum for motorcycles. This large community has a thriving music scene, and there’s no lack of entertainment and art to attend.

Washington D.C.

Inspite of being the capitol of the USA and historic powerhouse of the eastern coast, D.C. is constantly evolving into a cultural hub. Of course, many political and national monuments pepper the city, from the White House, to the Pentagon, to the many war memorials. But, dispute its reputation, not everyone is held in the clutches of boat shoes and Ann Taylor clothes. Sure, formal business wear has its place, but a visitor will find a variety of different styles and cultures within the city - especially in D.C.’s other treasures like the art gallerias and malls. While being the primary location of national government and logistical leadership, they have many avenues and events to offer for those non-political guests.

San Francisco, California

Who can think about California without mentioning the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz? Although San Francisco doesn’t have quite the same reputation for the partying and media fame of its southern companions, it is the financial center of the great state, and boasts many scenes of natural beauty. Its easy to fit in here with trendy and casual wear while exploring the different cultural centers of this cosmopolitan city. The history and diversity of San Francisco makes it a place of hidden treasures and scenery to investigate.
