Social Media’s Influence on Fashion Trends

Social media is a tool that a lot of fashion enthusiasts use to discover inspiration, ideas, and new trends. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok, and Pinterest are very popular when it comes to fashion trends; all kinds of new styles are being uploaded each day. Though social media can be a blessing towards fashion trends, it can also be a curse as well. Microtrends are something that has become popular on the internet nowadays, where various fashion trends are only popular for a short period of time. This makes consumers bored, and eager to look for even newer trends. It also hinders self-expression in fashion and increases major environmental damage. Here are some pros and cons of social media on fashion trends:

Emerging Brands

Specific fashion trends can become so popular to the point where new shops (typically online) create an entire store for that trend alone. As more and more trends emerge, this gives newer fashion brands ideas on what to sell to their customers. You could scroll through social media and find tons of advertisements for shops you probably have never heard of, all because a certain trend brought it into existence.

Microtrends

While people shop for popular trending items, newer trends are born simultaneously. This gives people the feeling of being left out, and the urge to buy the latest thing increases. As this concept continues, the older trends start to die out and people do not favor them anymore. This leads to environmental issues– consumers start to get rid of their old-trending fashion, typically by throwing them away. Lots of microtrend-based shops mass produce tons of clothing, which typically aren't the best of quality. These old clothes are can be found in many landfills, polluting our planet with fabric.

Personal Style

As people start to see the negative impact of how social media affects fashion trends, people are also finding solutions to the problem. Many social media users have started to form their own personal style and encourage their audience to do the same. Influencers are now educating their followers on how there is power in individuality, what they can do to feel good about what they wear, and how to curate their own style. This is a big pro within social media’s influence on fashion trends, as people are finding the benefit of self-expression.
