Sui first took inspiration from rock and roll. She had a desire to dress rock stars and rock concertgoers. This inspiration can be seen in her earlier collections with a more punk inspiration to them. What Anna Sui does best is she uses narrative storytelling in her designs. From cowgirls, Mods, surfers, and pirates, all different characters Sui has focused on in her various collections. Doing this has allowed her to design using her imagination giving the clothes a whimsical homemade feel to them Which is why Anna Sui stands out over other designers.
