TikTok Style Guide
TikTok—a place where dances are learned and Vine-style humor is generated—is gaining traction in the world of fashion. Beauty influencers have taken the app by storm with makeup artists creating viral tutorial videos, allowing anyone to duet and copy the look, and thousands of fashion hauls. Fashion and beauty swiftly cemented its place on the platform, shedding a shower of trends in its path.
1. Tie Dye
The fascination with tie dying any plain clothing items from t-shirts to sweatpants to Nike socks to hoodies, sprang up during the global pandemic. With nothing else to do but sit at home, tie dying kits began selling out in masses across arts and crafts stores and websites. Social media influencers began uploading tutorials on Youtube on how to create sweatsuits or where to buy tie dye sets from ethical brands.
Brooke Miccio, a fashion and beauty Youtube creator, stated to Insider regarding the flourishing popularity in tie dye clothing, "They are repurposing classic items that many people can find in their closets."
When styling tie dye to appear on the trendier side, it is important to consider what type of tie dye you are wearing. The bright, rainbow tie dye pieces that you see hanging from tourist trap beach shops are not going to create the style you are looking for. Muted yellow and white tie dye sweatsuits are perfect for a stylish yet relaxing type of day or dark navy and blue tie dyed swim suits for beach days. It’s more about finding soft colors that can complement your wardrobe to create looks.
2. Tennis Skirts
90's and early 2000's trends have dominated TikTok and it was no surprise that tennis skirts began populating its feed. Sportswear sites began quickly selling out of tennis skirts almost instantly, with only some being able to afford the resale price of of $80 and above on Depop. The tennis skirt is a staple in the Y2K aesthetic, which also signifies a revival of the older ages of Tumblr.
So who else is to thank for this tennis skirt trend that's completely on fire? “Euphoria”. This HBO show starring Zendaya takes place in a very unique high school setting, has generated a fashion sense that has spurred trends such as corsets, body harnesses and of course the tennis skirt. With a show so popular amongst a mass amount of young people, it was no surprise that the fashion within it would become the rage as well.
Styling a tennis skirt is simple and really becomes such a statement piece when everything is pulled together correctly. There are also multiple ways to style the look. First are oversized, graphic tees. This can be bleach dyed shirts, band tees or any oversized tee you feel confident in. With the tee and the tennis skirt together, it gives off the model off-duty effect, while still looking very put together. Another way to push the tennis skirt trend to high fashion is by adding a pullover with a white, collared shirt. Maybe a bubble gum pink sweatshirt or an oversized, knit sweater with the pop of the collar shirt, will spew preppy and laidback tennis player energy. It is cute, simple and very easily done.
3. Sweatsuit Sets
An off-chute of the tie dye set trend has been the sweatsuit set. Amongst celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski to Elsa Hosk, the sweatsuit set has gained a massive following. When thinking of the sweatsuit set, many think of the lowriding, skin tight, hot pink or blue raspberry colored sweatpants and zip ups from Juicy Couture. The signature spangled "Juicy" across the back the pants is not easily forgotten. It is popping, in your face and not an accurate representation of the sweatsuit trend today.
Today, it is about muted colors such as whites, pastel yellows, periwinkles and tans. The sweatpants and sweatshirt match and there are no large logos. It is very minimalistic. It is no longer something you wear to sleep in or when you get back from work. It is the new staple, and what many are grabbing now that most of their work is being held through Zoom calls.
To style, a slightly oversized crew neck with matching jogger sweatpants, paired with a dainty gold necklace and gold hoops is a staple outfit within the sweatsuit trend. If you are a fan of vibrant colors you can switch from matching neural sweatsuits to colorful ones, whatever you feel most confident in. However, having at least one neutral set is now a necessity for all wardrobes.
5. Gold Necklaces
Layered accessories are a huge part of 2020 fashion. They complement all other trends too such as matching sweatsuits, tie dye sets and whether it be for a zoom meeting or for class, accessories really complete any outfit. One of the biggest accessory trends for 2020 involves anything and everything gold. And when it comes to the gold, the chunkier the better.
It is sleek, modern and entirely versatile. Fashion influencers have been wearing them with their bathing suits, sleek tank tops or with pullovers. These are chains for any type of outfit, and instantly elevates the entire look. Gold necklaces also work well with absolutely any aesthetic, making it a statement piece really for anyone.
6. White Button Downs
The white button down is an essential piece to any and every wardrobe. Thrown under an oversized crewneck pullover or tucked it into a pair of mom jeans, it’s a closet staple everyone should own. No matter how you wear it, it adds an air of sophistication to whatever you're wearing.
