The Pastel Goth Aesthetic
Fashion is about individuality. Whether it be how your hair is styled, or whether you should wear heels or Vans on a night out, fashion is what you make of it. This concept of individuality is deeply rooted in the Pastel Goth aesthetic. The Pastel Goth aesthetic is a take on the 2013 era of "soft grunge" which consisted of black tights under jean shorts, oversized flannels and bleached band tee's. This trend originated from Tumblr which swiftly followed with the backlash that it was turning the ideas of "self-doubt" and "helplessness" into fashion.
As that infamous era died down, the rise of Pastel Goth began. This trend echoed positivity and individuality and began picking up speed on a plethora of social media platforms. Pastel Goth also takes inspiration from the MySpace era. Many fashion enthusiasts criticize this style, as it is not on top of the trends and would be considered "out there". However, some people find comfort in the dyed hair and lacey corset tops.
To style this aesthetic, one needs button-up tops, leg garters, and corsets in a variety of colors. There are also ways to tone down the trend, to make this style approachable for any circumstance. The color black takes up most of this color palette and is worn often by followers of this aesthetic. Black mesh tops, skinny jeans, and platform leather shoes are popular staples on the casual side of this aesthetic. While it still follows the overall theme of the style, it is toned down and appropriate for a mellow setting.
Besides black, the other colors of this aesthetic consist of pinks, purples, and blues. Either taking the monochrome aesthetic path or the eye-popping wig and corset look will fulfill Pastel Goth.
Makeup also is a large part of Pastel Goth. Jet black, winged eyeliner, matte lipsticks such as chocolates, reds, and pale pinks and dark blushes. But really, the makeup is supposed to accentuate the features and really display ones' identity.
Pastel Goth is strange, interesting, and unique. It takes an individual who doesn't care about the latest trends to wear a corset and colored wigs to the grocery store or maybe to class. But, it is all about positivity, individuality, and acceptance of creativity, no matter who may critique it.
